A Mustang Thought: Why We Say "Not Today" To The S550

Just a quick, fast comment:

A big part of owning a Mustang is making it your own. Fail in that regard and you're just another hair dresser or mid-lifer in a stock Mustang failing.

So, why do I say, "Not Today!"?

Because there is ZERO aftermarket for this car which means that you and everyone else who buys one early will look just like everyone else who bought one early. Sure, there will be manufacturer options and maybe even a few dealership options but there won't be anything like the aftermarket currently available for S197's and back.

What do we say to the S550 Mustang?

"NOT TODAY!"

Wait till 2016 and the TT V8 to go bankrupt over.

Because Cobra R*

At least I hope they bring that nameplate back. Or the Terminator.

We also say "Not Today" because it's not available yet

Zero aftermarket....now. Will there be one to show up? I think "Yes" and, eventually, and around the world too if this is truly a global 'stang. How will the rest of the world react? Well, we shall see.

I wouldn't say zero, the carry over engines will have parts. I give it a month before someone has the first supercharged coyote 5.0 S550.

Considering that the Roush people have been reported drivinvg a test mule, I think that aftermarket support will be there right when it hits the showrooms, just like the S197.

Oh man, you don't need a 2016 to break your bank.

Hell, you don't even need a Mustang.

You can break your bank over a bloody GEO!

It's just how you chose to go broke. Amiright?

Of course it'll come.

But it'll take years for that market to be reflective of the aftermarket currently available for pre-S550 Mustangs. Years and years.

Look at the Twins. That's an aftermarket car if ever there was one and while it's getting stronger day by day, our Sterotypical Indian friend can back me up when I say it's NOTHING like the Mustang's current aftermarket options.

These things take time. And they take time to become affordable. Time.

Yeah, no. I agree.

But that won't be the kit you want, even if it's available for purchase.

Look at the Garrett kit for the Twins.

Oh my God, you mean there isn't an aftermarket for a car that isn't in production yet!?

THE HORROR!!!! THE HORROR!!!!

Seriously, dude. That's what everyone has said about every successive generation of Mustangs. That was a theme that was particularly harped upon when the S197 debute after two generations of Fox-chassis Mustangs.

You know what happened? A huge aftermarket sprouted almost overnight, much of it brought to you by the same guys who have always come up with aftermarket offerings for Mustangs, and much of it from the same guys that will offer aftermarket parts for the new Mustangs.

Ford isn't stupid; just like it has done every other time, it will provide major aftermarket suppliers cars and specs before the car actually goes on sale so that they can have the time they need to develop parts for it.

Chill. The car isn't even on sale yet, and won't be until the third quarter of next year . Hell, the car isn't even in production yet. What we're seeing right now are pre-production cars.

This is exactly what they said when the "New Edge" mustang came out with the 4.6l engine.

I agree, if you're talking about Ford authorized aftermarket, which is to say; expensive and inaccessible.

I'm really talking about the true aftermarket, not the Ford authorized "after" market.

But hey, I could be wrong and I'm okay with that.

Yo, Paul...

... chillax.

The point is, I'm saying not the now. No the now. Not right this moment. It's the reason I'd hold off on getting too excited or throwing my dollars at a dealership in the hope of being on the wagon early. I am literally talking about the gap between today and the vehicle being available for purchase.

And yeah, no freaking kidding huh? There's like this demand thing, so I'm pretty sure someone is gonna hop on the supply end of things. Having said that, and as a counterpoint to everyone pointing to the aftermarket available surrounding the launch of the S197; it was good, sure... but it's a heck of a lot better now. That's kind of the point I'm making...

... there isn't currently an aftermarket. There isn't even currently a car we can buy.

Just... wow. Dude.

It seems like a lot of people are missing the reference, which is surprising, and further taking "Not Today" to mean "Not ever, assholes!" which is also surprising.

Being pedantic isn't a bad thing. I was just observing, given that my OP was meant as a tongue-in-cheek commentary on the aftermarket currently not available for a car which is also not yet available.

It's from Game of Thrones.

Google that shit.

What I meant is actually encouraging. The New Edge has terrible aftermarket when it came out, but look at it now.

No, no, I get what you're saying. What I'm getting at is that what you're saying has all of the logic of potato deep sea astronaut.

I gather that you're not saying the "now." No on is talking about the "now," seeing as the "now" is irrelevant due to the car not being in production. In the gap between right now and the vehicle being released for purchase, Ford is providing aftermarket companies with specs, and, soon, mules for them to use in the development of bolt-on parts. Ford knows that the aftermarket is a big part of the Mustang's success, and they're not going to screw that up.

It just takes a little time in advance of the car's public release, and that's what's happening right now. But, again, there's no point in getting upset about a problem that simply doesn't exist. It's like complaining that your unborn child is a redhead rather than a blonde. It just makes no sense.

Potato deep sea astronaut?

I'm pretty sure there's potential for a successful business model there and possible hyphenation.

So yeah, maybe you're reading my comment as a complaint. It's not. Maybe you're generalizing. Either way, all I am saying, the sum total of all of it, is that given the lack of a current aftermarket (not that there won't be one, or that it'll suck giant monkey balls fresh from a sweaty work out with Donkey Kong) affects how I feel about the car currently.

Leaving aside how I may feel about the current car, and the details we've got our grubby mits on, and speaking as a long time Mustang enthusiast, I'm reserving judgement until I know what my options will be in the future to make my potential S550 my own.

Thus, "NOT TODAY!"

Ford already learned the lesson, yeah. That's not something I knew (insert sarcasm font here).

Having said that I'm not saying anything else.

I had JBA headers on my '05 within 10 days of owning it. I actually ordered my car in 2004 and it was in my hands Feb, 28th of '05. Pretty sure the supercharger kits were available by July. It was the same thing with the 5.0 when it first came out. To be honest with Ford already using an established motor with the Coyote, I don't foresee to much wait time for aftermarket engine stuff. Suspension will likely take a bit longer. If Ford truly set the 911 as a benchmark as has been claimed, I doubt that will be an issue for most.

In theory, I agree.

I expect that yeah, we'll see the same old superchargers ready to roll pretty quickly. I imagine we'll even see headers, catbacks and axlebacks pretty quick.

What I wonder more about are the body mods. I mean, it's really just an issue of modelling on CAD using OEM specs supplied by Ford but... ehhh, well we'll see.

Louvers, man. LOUVERS!

Speaking as an S197 owner, with Louvers on. Dis'un hiss'un be my'un.
